Porfiro Diaz

Jose de la Cruz Porfirio Diaz Mori ruled mexico with an iron fist for over 35 years from 1876 to 1911. His period or rule was marked by great progress and modernization, during Porfilios rule the Mexican economy boomed. However the benefits of this were felt by very few as millions of peons labored in virtual slavery. Porfirio finally lost his power in 1911 after rigging an election against Francisco I. Madero, which sparked the entire Mexican revolution of 1910.

Francisco Ignacio Madero Gonzalez was was a small man with a high pitched voice which made it very hard for him t obtain the respect of soldiers and revolutionaries who saw him effeminate. Madero was a vegetarian and a teetotaler, all things of which were very peculiar in mexico at this time. Madero's key role was to overthrow the government ruled by Diaz and he hoped to eventually be the leader of Mexico. After the resignation of Diaz on May,25 1911 Madero became the highest political leader of the country.

Emiliano Zapata was a man of the people Zapata became a leading figure in Anenecuilco, where his family had lived for many generations. He became deeply involved with the struggles of the local peasant farmers . Zapata did whatever he could in within his power to give the villagers back what was rightfully their's. Zapata was truly a man for the people that protected the rights of the peons and villagers mainly because he knew how they felt since he grew up in some of the same conditions.

Pancho Villa as a child contributed to the hard labor of farm work at his parents farm. He experienced the peasant/peon life the majority of Mexico's people lived. Early in his life Villa joined a gang which he would later lead. Villa and his group of bandits would steal cattle, rob shipments of money, and committed additional crimes against the wealthy to give back to the poor. By stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, some would say Pancho Villa resembled that of a modern day Robin Hood.

Victoriano Huerta served as one of Diaz' former generals and a very ambitious man in his own right. Huerta served for Diaz in the early days of the Revolution, and he continued on as a general as Madero took office. Huerta eventually abandoned Madero and decided he could make a change, as fighting was going on in Mexico Huerta arrested and executed Madero, in February of 1913, seizing complete power for himself. Almost all of the major Mexican warlords were against Huerta and they eventually decided to bring him down in 1914.
